Myself Nagarbhai Makwana, born in a small village ‘Talsana’, Surendranagar of Gujarat. I am a weaver and have mastery in weaving a single Ikat silk patola saree which is considered as one of the most complicate handloom Ikat weaving. I have learnt this intricate art from my father.

My journey of weaving Single Ikat patola saree had been started before 27 years ago in 1993.  My vision and passion towards making Patola saree has lead to providing employment to me and my family members. I am engaged in this profession since 1993. I have completed the Certificate Programme in HANDLOOM TECHNOLOGY in the year 1991 from the Institute for Handloom Technology, Gandhinagar. In this Diploma study I have learnt weaving, designing and dying process.

I have been teaching the art of weaving patola to my family member and also to other peoples for conservation and spread of our traditional weaving art. Due to contemporary market demands, I have evolved my own style of motifs and designs that are being used in designing salwar kameez, dupatta, shawl, scarf, etc.

Now I am giving employment to more than 15 families through the heritage patola weaving. I started using ecofriendly colors instead of naphthol colors and also inform others to use ecofriendly colors.

I am also making different traditional and fancy designs in various color matching. I started making tweel designs, multicolor designs in Ikat saree and also used to make fancy patola designs as per customer demands.

I have mastery in every process of making patola like tying, dyeing, weaving, finishing, etc. My Specialty is in ‘Butta’ border design with jari lining and multicolor in ‘Amba daal’ design. I am also using traditional designs like ‘Narikunj’,  ‘Paanbhat’,  ‘Chhabadi’,  ‘Navratna’, etc. The jari butta work in fancy designs is one of the most accepted designs by customers which are made by me. I am also trying to keep changes in designs and color combinations.

In fashion show of Rajkot exhibition I presented my sarees and shawl on ramp also. In the year 2018, I also presented single ikat patola saree with design representing traditional Gujarati folk dance ‘Garba’ for National award.

I greatly believe in keeping our tradition of weaving of patola saree to next generations. I am also providing guidance to newcomers who interested in this art and want to learn it. I will make my full efforts to keep my tradition and teach it to others.

         Thank you.
